Hand Painted Kitchen Shirley, West Midlands
This was a wonderful project to work upon – the kitchen was housed in a beautiful rebuilt cottage surrounded by approximately 5 acres of pasture, just outside Solihull in Shirley… donkeys and sheep in the paddock, free range chickens and ducks doing what chickens and ducks do, in the gardens and ponds and two dogs generally having a lovely life!The kitchen was handmade about 8 years ago and had been repainted (by another company) 4 years ago – unfortunately the finish had suffered somewhat and “saponification” had occurred around some of the recesses and around handles… here’s the science bit; technically saponification is the formation of a soap-like substance caused by the reaction between a fatty acid ester and an alkali. This leads to the decomposition of the binder component of alkyd and oil based coating by alkali and moisture… to me and you, the paint finish is attacked by grease and moisture on hands and atmosphere to create a thick pliable paint finish that is prone to scratches and often alters colour from the intended shade.
The remedy is to remove all soft coats, abrade and clean ready for non-saponifiable coats – which we did, thoroughly, with or Industrial degreasers and “Dust-Free” sanding system.
Once fully prepared the kitchen was coated with two coats of Tikkurila OTEX a high adhesion primer – mixed to the same colour as the topcoat and then two further coats of Tikkurila Helmi 30 in our client’s chosen colour. We abrade, finely, between coats to give a wonderful flawless finish to all of our Hand Painted projects. Our clients even commented that the finish looked more “automotive” than Painting & Decorating… praise indeed!
As ever, all doors and drawers were removed and stored effectively onsite, painted and then assembled to the delight of our clients – a “new” kitchen, according to them it looks even better now than it did when it was newly installed.
Our clients have already booked us to go back next year to Hand Paint the Utility Room cabinets and further storage areas. We are already looking forward to the project; they really were a fabulous family to work for!
