The Perfect Partnership: Handmade Cabinetry & Specialist Painting

There is a unique satisfaction in being brought into a project right at the beginning of a kitchen’s life cycle. While a large portion of my work involves transforming mature, well-loved wooden kitchens, hand-painting a newly installed, bespoke kitchen is a genuine privilege.

This recent project took me to the picturesque village of Chelmarsh in Worcestershire to paint a newly fitted, stunning handmade kitchen built by the team at Williamson Mills. Based just over the county border in rural Shropshire, Williamson Mills crafts truly exceptional bespoke cabinetry - using rock maple for their frames, doors, and drawers, alongside solid oak internals and traditional joinery. When cabinetry is crafted to this caliber, standard decorating simply won't do; it requires a specialist hand-painted finish that honors the joinery and brings out the very best in the design.

Design-Led Decisions & Architectural Harmony

In a rural setting, a kitchen needs to bridge the gap between traditional country warmth and clean, contemporary living. Working alongside the client to select the perfect palette was a highlight of the project. We spent time considering how natural light moves across the room throughout the day, ensuring the chosen tones would complement the architectural features of the house and the surrounding landscape.

The Art of the Finish: Respecting the Woodworking

Painting brand-new, timber and primed oak/maple units requires a very specific, disciplined approach. You aren't just applying paint; you are creating a durable, silky-smooth protective shell that becomes an integral part of the furniture.

  1. Protection First: Before opening a single tin of paint, the client's home, new worktops, and flooring were fully masked and protected using heavy-duty materials.

  2. Dust-Free Preparation: Even freshly installed joinery requires meticulous preparation. Using a professional dust-free sanding system, every frame, door, and end panel was micro-sanded to establish an ultra-smooth substrate.

  3. High-Performance Priming: I applied specialized high-adhesion primers tinted closely to the final topcoat colors, ensuring seamless depth of tone and maximum durability.

  4. Specialist Topcoats: The final layers were hand-applied using premium Scandinavian furniture finishes - chosen for their self-leveling properties, scuff resistance, and flawless, low-lustre matte aesthetic.

The goal with a hand-painted finish on bespoke cabinetry isn't to look like a thick plastic coating; it’s about achieving a smooth, tactile, "factory-original" feel that invites you to run your hand across every rail and stile.

The Result: A Showroom-Quality Heart of the Home

The finished kitchen in Chelmarsh is a testament to what happens when master cabinet-making meets specialist finishing. The deep, rich tones highlight the crisp lines and precision engineered by Williamson Mills, while the hand painted finish - subtle, refined, and uniform - adds an unmistakable touch of artisan luxury that spray-painting or mass production simply cannot replicate.

The clients were absolutely thrilled to see their newly installed kitchen evolve into a warm, inviting, and design-led centerpiece for their home. It was a real joy to collaborate on this project in such a lovely part of Worcestershire!
